Regardless of his or the majority of voters view on same-sex marriage, that comment is definitely callous. Wow. Perhaps it sounds different with a Texas twang?
As to the issue: I think the hot-spot for most people is the use of the word "marriage" for same-sex unions. Traditionalists (and not just conservatives) attach a level of sanctity and religious recognition to the word - and the majority of Americans have somewhat traditional views on marriage.
OTOH, most polls indicate a strong majority of support for civil unions with the exact same legal rights as marriage.
That's where I stand - do anything you want but don't call it "marriage".
