Food For Thought

A letter to the Tallahassee Democrat brought up an interesting point: Where was the ACLU in the Imus bruhaha? Isn't this a freedom of speech issue?

It's not really a First Amendment issue: the government is not involved in the firing. That's probably why they haven't done anything.

Now, if the FCC were threatening him, _then_ they'd jump in with both feet, I'm sure.

Technically, it is a First Amendment issue but, you're right, not a government issue.

The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law...", and later Amendments (15th?) extended that sort of thing to state and local governments.

So yes, it's a free speech issue, but not in any way a First Amendment issue.

This isn't a First Amendment OR a free speech issue. It was a business decision. CBS and MSNBC decided to fire him because the sponsors bailed.

Yes, Susie, but they could say that the free speech of their commentators trumps momentary business decisions. That kind of attitude could very well get them enough sponsors to replace the ones who bailed.

As Evelyn Beatrice Hall quoted Voltaire, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Maybe they were just looking for any excuse to fire him as he was way, way over the hill. I remember listening to him in the AM on my drive to work in NYC in the early 80's.

Ironic, isn't it, that with all of the monitoring MM does of talk-show hosts that the one they actual score on is a liberal.
