Fascinating analysis. I don't agree with some of her examples; for example the Republicans getting irate at the polling station in 2000, IMHO, pales in comparison with the anti-war marchers throwing things at deploying troops which she doesn't mention.
Another thing overlooked is that the societies she draws a comparison to had radically different histories than ours which drove the move to totalitarian societies.
All of them had either never experienced democracy or had new, weak democracies under extreme economic duress. Pinochet was the backlash from a communist takeover in Chile. Mussolini was the result of a loss of national pride and military corruption during World War One.
Is our democracy under threat? Always has been, always will be. Sometimes by good intentions and sometimes by outside evils.
Are there clear and present threats? Possibly. I have to look closer at the Warner bill she mentioned, as an example.
