Nice post.
I agree with the basic sentiments; it would be cool to collect a smorgasbord of features from different providers.
I have TMobile as a provider and they've been very responsive and reasonable insofar as customer service. But what drives me nuts is the nickel-and-diming that goes on. Why, for example, am I charged for text massaging? Even those I didn't ask for but received? And what's with this ringtone scam? I should be able to create my own and USB them over to my phone (there is software to do this, xingtone, but it's convoluted).
Something else - the seemingly artificial high price of the phones. The electronics are really not that sophisticated - why would the retail for a Razr be $200 or so? But they use the high price of the phones to justify 1 and 2 year contract lock-ins.
VoiP has been touted as the phone company killer since...well...I first heard it in 1989 or so. Companies like Vonage enter the fray but they have problems with 911 and also seem to have artificially high subscription rates.
On a broader note, isn't it amazing that we all willingly pay hundreds of dollars a month for services like cells, cable TV, internet access, and movie rentals that we would have even dreamed of 20 or some years ago?
