The Idealists are Leaving the Loonies

Touching, heartfelt op-ed piece. You have to read through the subhead which is inflammatory to see what the author is saying.

I walk away from a long-term intimate relationship.

Or better stated he finally admitted to himself who he really is.

...people who once championed solidarity with oppressed populations everywhere -- reciting all the ways Iraq's democratic experiment might yet implode.

As a progressive I still champion solidarity with oppressed populations everywhere -- but going to war under false pretenses is a higher concern.

This idea that the democratic elections in Iraq are somehow a validation of an illegal and unjust war is pure whitewash.

Leading voices in America's "peace" movement are actually cheering against self-determination for a long-suffering Third World country because they hate George W. Bush more than they love freedom.

The US deposing of Saddam is hardly Iraqi self-determination.

...Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and all the other Usual Suspects the left so regularly employs to keep from seeing its own reflection in the mirror.

Again, it appears he is finally coming to terms with who he really is (or at least admitting it to the rest of us.) What did he find in the mirror when he finally embraced these Neo-Con Apologists?

All my commitments centered on belief in equal opportunity, due process, respect for the dignity of the individual and solidarity with people in trouble.

What equal opportunity do the 103,000 dead in Iraq have?

Where is the due process when we decide to "fix" intelligence data to justify an illegal war?

Where is the respect for the dignity of the individual in an environment of abuse and torture?

But many had since made clear that they had also changed their minds about the virtues of King's call for equal of opportunity.

I just don't get what he is saying here... is he saying Leftists are becoming racists or that King would consider this war with Iraq a victory for civil rights?

All of which is why I have come to believe, and gladly join with others who have discovered for themselves, that the single most important thing a genuinely liberal person can do now is walk away from the house the left has built.

Very courageous. I'd suggest starting a recovery group so that other delusional imperialists can benefit from his process.

I think you missed the point: The author is showing how progressive ideals are being sacrificed for political purposes. Ironic that your response to his thoughtful op-ed is mainly couched in soundbite phrases and ad-hominem attacks.

Gonzo, most of that post addressed the issues raised in the original article. You're the one who came back with an ad hominem attack...

Very lame response, Gonzo.

Your Jedi mind tricks are useless here.
